Texting and Walking Consequences: Getting caught in a Storm Drain

Last week, Utah Valley‘s Walk, Run, Text staircase went viral. The school’s marketing and communications department decorated staircases into three lanes: walk (on the left), run (in the middle), and text (on the right), as a means to engage its students, not necessarily for safety.

“When you have 18- to 24-year-olds walking on campus glued to their smartphones, you’re almost bound to run into someone somewhere; it’s the nature of the world we live in,” UVU’s creative director Matt Bambrough said in a blog post. “The design was meant for people to laugh at rather than a real attempt to direct traffic flow,”

But maybe it was on to something.

Recently, a young girl in China slipped into the metal grill of a drain and got her foot caught inside. Passersby called the local fire department which removed the bars and freed her.

She wasn’t that bruised but her ego most likely was more.

And whoa, she’s got a pretty thin leg to fit down that hole. None of us in the TechYaya’s offices would fit in that small a hole but then again, we love our comfort foods! ha!
